This course addresses professional ethics and values for musicians in UU religious settings and the need for self-care as a part of establishing and modeling healthy boundaries. In this three-session module, participants will explore covenanting and professional Codes of Conduct in depth.  Participants will also become familiar with different assessment tools and practices for self care.

Training Requirements

The Ethics and Care for Musicians module is an online learning experience comprised of three 2-hour webinars with reading and other assignments for each session. Credit will be offered for full participation in the module. Full participation includes:

  • Online attendance at three 2-hour sessions
  • Reading and reflection to prepare for each session
  • Completion of final project
  • Submission of final evaluation within a week of the ending of the module

Goals of the Training

Participants will:

  • Understand the content and responsibilities outlined in the AUUMM Code of Conduct, Personal Romantic Relationships guidelines, Accountability Procedures, and Draft Letter of Understanding,  
  • Be familiar with the Codes of Conduct for religious professional colleagues including UUMA, LREDA, AUUA, and UUAMP, 
  • Understand covenanting best practices and purposes, and research existing covenants in their setting,
  • Understand the dynamics of their staff team, what their role is within it as the music professional, and how staff boundaries get understood and established,
  • Articulate professional boundaries as a tool for caring for others and self, and 
  • Discuss why self-care is essential for all religious professionals.
